Military Connections, Finding Solace in Nature and Community

Indian River Lakes Conservancy is a sanctuary of nature’s wonders that goes beyond its role as a haven for wildlife and conservation. Here, we bridge the gap between nature and community, but not just any community, the military community as well. Tucked away in Upstate NY, IRLC has the privilege of living close to the very transient community of Fort Drum.We recognize the challenges that come with being military affiliated and the disconnect some feel from the ever constant displacement that is military life. Having this unique outlook allows IRLC to provide programs that have the chance to bring the civilian community and military community together and strengthen the bonds, reminding us we are all interconnected with others and nature.

Nature is healing not only for soldiers but their families too. From walks in the great outdoors, finding a “sit spot” to ponder, to kayaking on crystal-clear waters; nature provides an atmosphere where decompression and healing can take place if needed. Studies conducted at Harvard show that exposure to green or natural environments can lead to mental restoration, supporting people to recover from the intense demands of modern life and service. IRLC hopes many people find solace on our trails and also community. IRLC prides ourselves in community and being a sense of unity that goes beyond boundaries and circumstances.

When you attend an IRLC event you are one of us. You are a part of our community. How long you have been here doesn’t matter. How long you plan on staying doesn’t sway us. Showing up makes a difference. Learning about our environment and the challenges nature faces now in the present and in the future matters. YOU matter. Being a part of our community matters. As we continue to root ourselves in purpose IRLC will continue advocating for natural settings that reduces stress, anxiety, and depression while enhancing overall mental well-being to all our community. The benefits don’t require long or remote trips: even minutes in a natural setting or nearby green space matter, making our local lakes, forests and trails valuable resources for both civilian and military-affiliated community members.
