Baker Woods Preserve Gets by With a Little Help From Our Friends

“Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people”  ~M. Mead

While the Carney family is able to keep up with the day to day tasks associated with maintaining the grounds and trails of the Baker Woods Preserve (BWP), it is both imperative and enjoyable to have the support of others to complete special projects and promote community.

The ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) Black River Chapter, spearheaded by event organizers Linda Burns and Rich Ross, has been a mainstay for Baker Woods Preserve. They host both fall and spring work days and recreational events throughout the area. The Carney’s and IRLC are grateful for their ability to productively mix business, pleasure and good food!

The latest work day took place on October 4th, 2025. Twenty participants ranging in age from 2 months to 86 years were able to excavate several truckloads of invasive honeysuckle, paint (benches, picnic tables and the deck overlooking the Indian River), and freshen up our Sensory Trail elements.  IRLC was represented with enthusiasm by Director Emeritus Ed Robertson and past board members Dick Edgar and Matt Carney.

Work day volunteer, Carol Bango, reflected on her experience “It is a peaceful oasis so close to my home in Harrisville. I go there to sit by the water, walk through the woods and read poetry.”

The Black River Chapter of the ADK hosts many enjoyable outings at Baker Woods Preserve and elsewhere.
