What's New
At Indian River Lakes Conservancy, we believe in the power of nature to create positive change and forge lasting connections. Our sensory trails at Redwood Hill and Baker Woods Preserves are specially designed to engage the senses and provide enriching experiences for visitors of all ages and abilities. We’re thrilled to hear how these trails have helped families connect more deeply with nature—and with each other. Here are a few stories that inspire us to continue creating spaces where everyone can find joy and discovery outdoors.
One family shared their experience with their son, who has autism and had been extremely fearful of insects. Although they loved nature, his fear made family hikes difficult. But when they brought him to the sensory trail at Redwood Hill, something remarkable happened. At first, he was hesitant, but as he explored the different sensory elements along the trail, his curiosity started to take over. Soon, he became absorbed in the experience, and his fear of insects began to fade. Now, their family enjoys hiking together on our preserves, discovering nature with joy and confidence.
Another family told us about their daughter, who loves music but had little interest in spending time outdoors. All of that changed when she visited IRLC’s “Little Bear Ramble” trail on Baker Woods Preserve, where she discovered a drum set made from logs. For her, this unexpected musical element opened a door to the outdoors. She now realizes that nature is filled with its own rhythms, and her family has been enjoying more time outside as she taps into her passion for music.
These are just a few examples of how nature can be a powerful connector, offering new ways to explore, learn, and grow. We invite you to visit Redwood Hill and Baker Woods Preserves and experience these special trails for yourself. Who knows—you might just create some unforgettable memories of your own.
