Wildlife Awareness

Recently, two kayakers on Sixberry Lake spotted a loon struggling with fishing line caught in its beak. They quickly contacted the Indian River Lakes Conservancy in hopes of helping the bird. Unfortunately, the loon was not rescued, and residents have not seen it since the day it was reported.

If you see a loon, or any wildlife, in distress, please contact officials. For loons specifically please reach out to the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation for guidance before taking action. If the bird is found deceased, it is important to remove it from the water. Leaving it poses a risk to other wildlife such as eagles, which could also become entangled in the fishing line.

This incident is a sobering reminder that our lakes and their wildlife are treasures worth protecting. Please be a responsible steward retrieve lost gear, dispose of unwanted fishing line safely, and help keep our waters safe for all who depend on them.

You can find fishing line recycling locations through the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation.
