The Indian River Lakes Conservancy (IRLC) welcomed 62 children to its annual Elizabeth May Duvall Foundation Nature Grows Kids’ Camp on July 14 through July 16 at its Redwood Hill Preserve.
“It was a truly special experience, filled with learning, laughter, and a deep connection to the outdoors,” said Camp Director Lisa O’Driscoll.
However, the camp was not without its challenges. Smoke from the Canadian wildfires caused hazardous conditions on the third day, causing the IRLC to move the camp indoors.
“Our volunteers made the most of it, but it was definitely ominous,” said IRLC Board Chair John O’Driscoll. “With climate change, temperatures have risen quickly, causing the forests to dry out. It makes me believe more strongly in the work that the IRLC is doing than ever.”
Despite the change in plans, campers were still able to immerse themselves in learning about the natural world. Throughout the camp, children (grades 1-6) did hands-on activities designed to build confidence, curiosity, and respect for nature. They learned essential outdoor skills, such as tying knots, properly using a walking stick, and understanding the basics of foraging. One of the highlights was creating their very own first aid kits – an empowering lesson in preparedness and safety.
They also had the unique opportunity to explore a solar-powered van, gaining insight into sustainable and minimalist camping. In addition, they learned what to pack for a safe and enjoyable hike, giving them practical knowledge they can carry into future adventures.
The little ones (Knee-highs) learned about outdoor adventure opportunities; did bark rubbing with paper, ants, bees, snails, and snakes; built mini shelters with sticks and clay; created a leaf name collage; made binoculars and bird feeders.
“This camp would not have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers, the support from sponsors, and lastly, the enthusiasm of the children who embraced every opportunity to learn and explore,” said Lisa. “Thank you to every parent, guardian, grandparent, and caregiver who took the time to transport children to and from camp each day. Thank you for being part of something so meaningful and memorable for children.”
