On Friday, July 11, 2025, the Indian River Lakes Conservancy (IRLC) hosted its Sweet and Savory Evening of Art at the Iva Smith Memorial Gallery—affectionately known as the Yellow Barn—in Hammond, NY. Nearly 40 attendees gathered for this open-to-the-public member event, which beautifully blended the themes of art, nature, and conservation.

The evening was a celebration of local creativity and the natural landscapes that inspire it. IRLC Office Manager, Katie Syring, addressed the audience with heartfelt remarks, stating, “Art and nature are intertwined without nature, art would not be as vibrant.” She posed the thoughtful question, “Without nature, where would our inspiration for color come from?” and emphasized that “the work IRLC is doing goes beyond trails, lands, and water it’s fundamental to many things, including art.”

IRLC volunteer Janet Carrington was particularly moved by the featured artist talk with Dawn Oman. “She was so raw and real, and it transported me to a place outside of my comfort zone that I felt comfortable being in,” Carrington reflected. “Through the conversation, I felt like I got to know a piece of who the artist is. Art is everywhere. There is no better palette for an artist than the environment. Each IRLC preserve is the blank canvas for nature.”

The gallery featured works by several artists, including Dawn Oman, Victoria E. Ransom, Diane Leifheit, Rollin Hanson, Paul Saphier, and Dennis Del Rossi each offering their unique perspectives on nature and creativity.

Guests also enjoyed live music by Kathy Sommer and refreshments provided by Garland City Brew Works with wine provided by Northern Flow Vineyard. The atmosphere invited reflection not only on the art displayed but also on the deep connections between conservation and culture in the Indian River Lakes region.

The event was a reminder that protecting the environment protects the inspiration that fuels creativity and that community, art, and nature are stronger when celebrated together.
