What's New

This past weekend, under blue skies, the Indian River Lakes Conservancy (IRLC) hosted a successful Stewardship Day at Redwood Hill Preserve. Volunteers of all ages — from young children to seasoned trail stewards — came together with tools, gloves, and generous hearts to prepare the trails for the season ahead. Their hard work and cheerful spirit were a powerful reminder that our preserves are not just places to visit, but shared spaces we care for together.
Volunteers focused their energy on tidying and maintaining the ADA-accessible trail system and the innovative Sensory Trails, which opened last year thanks to a partnership with Encompass Recreation. These inclusive trails were thoughtfully designed to welcome explorers of all ages, sizes, and capabilities, offering a rich outdoor experience through a variety of sensory stations that invite touch, sound, sight, and movement.
By keeping these trails clear, safe, and engaging, our volunteers helped ensure that everyone — regardless of physical ability or sensory processing style — can enjoy the wonder of the woods. The overlook at Butterfield Lake, a favorite destination on the trail, provided a stunning backdrop for breaks and quiet moments, reminding us all of the beauty that surrounds us.
Beyond trail work, Stewardship Day highlighted something even more vital: the importance of getting children outside. Kids joined in the efforts, learning how to use tools, problem-solve, and take pride in their environment. In a world increasingly dominated by screens and schedules, opportunities like these are more essential than ever. Time spent in nature improves mental health, reduces stress, and fosters curiosity and confidence. When children help care for the land, they also grow a deeper appreciation for it — something that benefits both them and the future of conservation.
Adults, too, benefit from time spent outdoors. Whether you’re hiking a trail, lending a hand with maintenance, or simply breathing in the forest air, nature has a way of grounding us and reminding us of what truly matters. Stewardship Day is a celebration of that connection — between people and place, and between each other.
Thanks to our amazing volunteers, the Redwood Hill Preserve trails are ready for adventure. Come walk, explore, and connect. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong supporter, we invite you to discover all that the trails have to offer — and to help us Keep the Wonder Alive.
