A Community Comes Together

A vision to preserve habitat and place for solace

In 2014, Elliot and Marjorie Hillback made a pivotal decision that would forever alter the landscape of the Indian River Lakes region. Their generous donation of 51 acres of pristine wilderness laid the groundwork for what is now known as the Redwood Hill Preserve—a testament to their commitment to environmental stewardship and community enrichment.

With the support of the Indian River Lakes Land Trust, the donated land was transformed into a sanctuary where nature thrives and the community gathers. Walking trails were carefully crafted, offering breathtaking views of Butterfield Lake and inviting outdoor enthusiasts to explore the diverse ecosystems within the preserve.

Making headway

In 2016, the vision expanded with the construction of the trailside learning center, designed and built by Richard Edgar and a dedicated team of volunteers. This center, designed to be wheelchair accessible, serves as a hub for public education programs, field trips, and community events throughout the year. From kids nature programs to speaker series, the learning center fosters a deeper connection between people and nature.

The completion of the Beatrice Rosamond All Access Trail in 2019 marked another milestone in the preserve's journey. This trail, which includes the trailside learning center, Butterfield Lake overlook deck, and composting toilet, ensures that individuals of all abilities can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors year-round.

In reflecting on their decision to donate the land, Elliott and Marjorie Hillback shared, "For us, preserving this land was about more than just protecting nature. It was about ensuring that future generations would have the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of the outdoors, and that our community would have a space to come together and connect with the natural world. We have loved this lake so much that we wanted to share its beauty with our community.
