A Legacy of Love for the Land

With over 3 miles of trails with access to the Indian River

Doris N. (née Blum) and Norman H. Baker cherished the property now known as the Baker Woods Preserve for over four decades. This pristine wilderness, alongside its 1890s farmhouse, served as their cherished retreat from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan.

In 2015, Doris made the heartfelt decision to donate this beloved land to the Indian River Lakes Conservancy (IRLC), ensuring its perpetual preservation and responsible enjoyment by all.

Nurturing land

Spanning 354 acres along the upper Indian River, the Baker Woods teem with diverse wildlife, from black bears to blue herons, amidst lush river and wetland habitats, a transitioning red pine plantation, and native forests.

With over 3 miles of trails, including access to the Indian River landing and non-motorized boat launch, visitors are invited to explore the preserve’s beauty from dawn till dusk, year-round.

Doris’s journey to the North Country began as she sought a rural refuge from her Central Park psychiatric office. Discovering an advertisement for a countryside retreat in the New York Times, she found herself drawn to the dilapidated farmhouse nestled on 220+ acres near the Indian River.

Upon acquiring the property, Doris and Norman embarked on a journey of restoration and stewardship, rehabilitating the farmhouse, implementing forward-thinking forestry practices, and nurturing the land’s natural beauty.

Their shared love for the North Country led to the expansion of their sanctuary, acquiring an additional 130+ acres across the river, forming the foundation of what is now the Baker Woods Preserve.

A haven for wildlife and humans

Since Doris’s decision to donate the land to the IRLC, the preserve has served as a haven for recreation and education, welcoming visitors to connect with nature and perpetuate the legacy of stewardship and community care embodied by Doris and Norman.

The preserve opened in August 2016, and Baker Woods Preserve has stood as a testament to their vision, providing accessible and enriching experiences for generations to come.
