Our Changing Climate

Adapting to Changing Weather Patterns

At the Indian River Lakes Conservancy (IRLC), we recognize the challenges posed by our changing weather patterns and are committed to proactive stewardship of our environment. By focusing on sustainable land management practices, we aim to enhance ecosystem resilience and mitigate the impacts of these shifts.

Conserving Land to Mitigate Effects

One of our primary strategies involves conserving and restoring natural landscapes. These efforts help maintain biodiversity, stabilize soil, and reduce the risk of flooding and erosion caused by extreme weather events.

By protecting wetlands, forests, and other natural habitats, we not only safeguard wildlife but also enhance our community's ability to withstand and recover from environmental changes.

Storing Carbon for a Greener Future

Land conservation also plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration. Forests and other natural areas act as carbon sinks, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

By expanding our preserved lands and promoting sustainable forestry practices, we contribute to the fight against climate change by keeping carbon out of the atmosphere.

Partnering for Preservation

In collaboration with the Northeast Wilderness Trust, we maintain the Grand Lake Reserve as a “Forever Wild” preserve. This unique initiative ensures that Grand Lake Reserve remains an old-growth forest of tomorrow, preserving substantial carbon stocks for future generations.

By protecting such pristine areas, we enhance biodiversity and ecosystem resilience while mitigating climate impacts.

Water Management & Protecting Our Watersheds

Preserving riparian zones, wetlands, and natural shorelines is vital for managing water resources and protecting our freshwater ecosystems. These habitats regulate water flow, improve water quality, and provide critical wildlife habitats. By conserving these areas, we ensure resilience against climate-related impacts such as droughts and floods, preserving our valuable water resources for future generations.

Our Red Lake Preserve, Theresa NY, exemplifies how natural areas mitigate flooding by accommodating fluctuating water levels and absorbing excess water throughout various seasons.

Affecting Hearts & Minds

Beyond conservation, we actively engage in community education and advocacy. By raising awareness about the importance of preserving natural landscapes, we empower individuals and especially young people to become stewards of their environment.

As an organization dedicated to environmental stewardship, the Indian River Lakes Conservancy firmly believes in the power of collective action to shape a positive future. We envision a world where both humans and wildlife not only survive but thrive in harmony with nature.

By protecting and restoring our natural landscapes today, we pave the way for a resilient tomorrow.
