Lake Statistics

Wildlife & Water Quality Reports

CSLAP (Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program) sampling has been conducted on Millsite Lake every year since 1997. Lake report cards can be found on the NYSFOLA (NY State Federation of Lake Associations) website. Millsite Lake was sampled by the NY Conservation Department in 1931 as part of the Biological Survey of the St. Lawrence River Basin.

Unfortunately, most of the water quality parameters measured by CSLAP were not included in this study. However, the limited water quality data show pH readings comparable to those measured by CSLAP and dissolved oxygen readings at the lake bottom that were similar to those measured at the surface. Newer data indicate that deepwater DO readings may be slightly depressed today, though this difference may not be significant.

The field notes from this study reported: “Millsite is a clear, deep lake with sand or rubble beaches. The shores are precipitous and wooded. The abrupt descent of the beaches into deep water and the lack of bays protected from the winds results in the scarcity of aquatic vegetation.”

History

Since the 1940s, Millsite Lake has primarily been dotted with private residences, offering residents a tranquil retreat amidst its natural beauty. The lake provides a serene environment for those seeking a peaceful lakeside lifestyle. Amidst its residential community, Millsite Lake is also home to 4H Camp Wabasso, operated by the Cornell Cooperative Extension since 1950. The camp has provided generations of youth with unforgettable summer experiences in the heart of upstate New York.

The Millsite Lake Property Owners Association (MLPOA) was created by concerned property owners in the 1970s to promote those activities that would foster a focused approach to continued lake quality and environmental health.   It also achieves to foster a spirit of community among property owners and friends of the lake. Since its inception the lake has benefited from the involvement of its members in activities such as water quality sampling, invasive species weed control, regulatory awareness, dissemination of clean water subject material, as well as many social gathering and events. Membership involvement and contributions has resulted in Millsite Lake being one of the cleanest and most desirable lakes in the region for swimming, fishing, boating, and other recreational activities.

Millsite Lake remains a cherished destination where private living harmoniously coexists with opportunities for outdoor recreation and community engagement.

The association is comprised of its general membership with a Board consisting of officers and directors elected by the membership. The association is a voluntary organization but membership is encouraged with several levels of membership and annual dues.  There are two general membership meetings each year scheduled in late spring (May) and early fall (Sept).

MLPOA also works closely with the Indian River Lakes Conservancy (IRLC) which is a land trust comprising of the 18 lakes within the Indian River Lakes watershed.
