Lake of the Woods is one of the 18 lakes in the Indian River Lakes system located on the St. Lawrence River plain in Jefferson County of northern New York. 

It is one of only three bodies of water in the Indian River Lakes system which has a special ecological character,  known as an “oligotrophic” lake, meaning it is deeper and colder than other types of lake.

Such a body of water is characterized by low nutrient levels, high water clarity due to a lack of algae, and relatively little aquatic vegetation. This in turn determines the types of fish and plant life that the lake will support
