History

The approach to the lake is from the historic town of Redwood, where the Redwood Glass Company once utilized sand from the lake to make their wares.

A train once brought many to the area where, upon disembarking, the passengers would take a trolley to Alexandria Bay or some would head down the hill to their moored St. Lawrence Skiffs. The first permanent cottages on the lake were built in the late 1800s.

Butterfield Lake is a Class B lake which means that the best intended use for the lake is for contact recreation—swimming and bathing; noncontact recreation - boating and fishing, aquatic life; and aesthetics. The lake is used by lake residents and the public for a variety of recreational purposes and can be accessed via a DEC boat launch site.

Butterfield Lake has been regularly stocked with walleye, up to 4.6 million 0.4 to 4.8 inch fish annually (larger fish are generally stocked in quantities ranging from 5,500 to 20,000). Fish species identified at the lake include black bullhead, black crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, northern pike, smallmouth bass, walleye and yellow perch.
