A Trail Cleared, A Memory Made

One spring morning, a small group of volunteers gathered at Redwood Hill Preserve. Their mission was simple: clear fallen branches from the trails after a long winter. No one thought twice about the task—just another stewardship day, another path made a little easier to walk.

That summer, a man brought his elderly mother to the preserve. Her health was failing, and she used a wheelchair, but she longed to be surrounded by trees, by birdsong, by the quiet hush of a forest in bloom. The accessible trail those volunteers had helped maintain made that visit possible.

It became their special place. Time and again, they returned to sit in the stillness, to share stories, to simply be. When she passed, her son came back once more—to spread her ashes in the woods that had given them those final moments of peace together.

The volunteers never knew what their efforts would mean to someone else. They just showed up, cleared the way, and left the preserve a little better than they found it.

But that’s the extraordinary thing about volunteering: you never truly know the impact you’re making.

At the Indian River Lakes Conservancy, we’ve seen it time and again. A child discovering the magic of nature at summer camp. A teen finding purpose and confidence through stewardship work. A family creating lifelong memories on our trails. Every story has one thing in common—someone like you who made it possible.

As we look ahead to a new season filled with events, stewardship days, and outdoor learning adventures, we invite you to be part of the story. We’ve refreshed our volunteer opportunities for 2025 and would love for you to explore how your time and talents could make a difference.
