A Message from Wylie Huffman, Retiring Executive Director

Serving as the IRLC’s first Executive Director has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I have cherished every moment of this journey and have been deeply humbled by the amazing generosity and dedication of our supporters and volunteers who keep the IRLC movng forward in our conservation mission each and every day.

Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones—expanding the land and public trails under our protection, fostering a deeper appreciation for the Indian River Lakes region, and changing lives through our children’s and family conservation programs. These accomplishments are a testament to what can happen when a community comes together for a cause greater than itself.

But there is still much to be done. To sustain the momentum we’ve built, we must continue to rally as a community, with more volunteers and financial support to meet the challenges our wild landscapes and water quality face. The threats are real, and the pace of conservation must accelerate to protect the places we hold dear.

While my role as Executive Director is coming to a close, my dedication to the IRLC is not. I look forward to staying involved—working to advance our development and stewardship efforts while continuing to connect with the incredible supporters who make this mission possible.

I am also proud to pass the torch to the next generation of conservation leaders. I could not be more thrilled that my friend and colleague of the past seven years, Heidi Sourwine, will be taking on the role of Executive Director. Heidi’s unwavering dedication, vision, and deep connection to this region give me every confidence that the future of IRLC is in excellent hands.

Thanks to all of you for being such a big part of my life. Your passion and generosity inspire me every day. I look forward to seeing you at an event or stewardship day soon. Until then, happy trails!!!

Warm regards,

Wylie Huffman
