Red Lake Preserve contains diverse habitat and geology, making it a haven for wildlife. There is a one-mile walking trail that leads through the woods and wetland to a scenic, natural shoreline.

Along this trail, there are multiple viewsheds, including a spur trail to the beaver pond overlook, and at the point on Red Lake. From the point, there is an opportunity to follow the developing trail along the shoreline and experience an adventurous esker traverse to the top of a ridgeline with additional views of the wetland on one side and Red Lake on the other.

Visitors are also welcome to arrive by canoe or kayak at the point and walk the trail from there.

Upcoming Improvements

IRLC is working with stewardship volunteers to build new trails on this beautiful preserve. The lakeside portion of the new loop trail was completed in early November, with the wetland side slated to be built soon. Kiosks are in the works, but not yet up at the preserve. We are excited to keep developing access to this beautiful place!

Want to help? In our ongoing commitment to community involvement, we invite you to contribute to the creation of these trails. If you're eager to lend a hand, connect with Anna at ahardiman@indianriverlakes.org. Be a part of our stewardship team and play a vital role in bringing these trails to life.

Looking for additional ways to make a lasting impact? Consider sponsoring benches, the kiosk, or other trail improvements. Reach out to us, and together, let's shape the future of this remarkable public conservation area.

History

The beautiful Red Lake property was the long-time homestead of Marilyn and Robert Neulieb starting in 1979. It is where they raised their family undisturbed and off-grid. After Robert’s passing in recent years, Marilyn reached out to see if it would be possible to collaborate with the Indian River Lakes Conservancy on preserving their land forever. In 2022, a NAWCA grant was leveraged to acquire Red Lake Preserve, eliminating the threat of development in this special place.
